Leadership & Management and Engineering apprenticeship training in the heart of North Yorkshire

Derwent Training Association
Apprenticeships are the beating heart of businesses across North Yorkshire – as this training provider and proud category sponsor of a North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards 2025, can attest.

Derwent Training helps apprentices, employers and individuals across the county to gain the skills they need in their chosen field – primarily in Leadership & Management and Engineering. If you think apprenticeships are the preserve of school leavers or building trades only, then it’s time to think again!

Learning for the future –whatever stage you’re at

From their training centre in Malton, Derwent Training can offer face-to-face training in Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5– high-calibre qualifications that equip individuals for promotion to the next level in their field. Derwent Training also offers online courses to upskill employees through CPD courses.

The majority of their in-house training courses are Level 3 apprenticeships, which are equivalent to two A-levels. As Level 3 apprenticeships form the ‘bedrock’ of Derwent Training’s delivery pathway, it seemed both logical and apt for the company to choose the Advanced Apprentice category to sponsor.

About Derwent Training

Derwent Training is an independent training provider which was established in 1988. It delivers apprenticeships in Leadership & Management and Engineering, and works with employers across North Yorkshire. It is also a not-for-profit charity which ploughs its revenue back into the business.

Apprentices either come direct from school or sixth form, while some apprentices in their mid-20s, 30s and 40s have chosen a change in career and made the decision to learn a trade. This proves that apprenticeships are indeed for all. In some cases, an employer may be looking to take on an apprentice and approach Derwent Traininghttps://bit.ly/4jHQoH3 for help. Although they are not an agency for apprentices, they frequently post vacancies and screen all applicants to match an individual with an employer.

Companies will also send individuals to Derwent Training to upskill, improve employability or increase their chances of progression in their field, by using the Leadership & Management apprenticeship pathways. Derwent Training is proud to help both employers and employees in equipping themselves with the skills and knowledge they need in the ever-changing economic climate and thus ensure the development, retention and work satisfaction of their employees.

It is rated ‘good’ by Ofsted, and has a 75 per cent achievement rate for all its apprenticeships – 13.5 percent above the national average. Furthermore, 100 per cent of all apprentices that reach their end point assessment go on to pass.

One employer who has worked with Derwent Training, North Sea Winches Ltd, said: “Working with Derwent Training has been key to the success we have had with our apprentices as they provide the fundamental underpinning knowledge and support to allow them to become the engineers of the future.’’

Claire Gavaghan, CEO of Derwent Training, believes the key to organisational success and growth lies in investing in comprehensive training, encompassing the development of both current staff and a future talent pool. Recognising the critical role of apprentices in this strategy, Derwent Training is a proud sponsor of the North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.

Become an apprentice

Apprentices, of any age or stage in their working life, can build skills and gain qualifications while earning a wage, through an apprenticeship.

It’s a combination of on and off-the-job training in a specific area eg Leadership & Management or Engineering with Derwent Training. You would be supported by an employer and by the staff at Derwent Training. For Engineering apprenticeships, you would be working four days a week and one day would be spent at the training centre. While Leadership & Management apprenticeships you attend the training centre once per month. On passing the apprenticeship course you gain a nationally-recognised qualification, an opportunity to obtain post nominals after you name and have the ability to progress onto higher levels of qualification with Derwent Training.
