Barnsley FC release followed by Port Vale move for ex-Doncaster Rovers and Dundee United man Max Watters

Max Watters has found a new home after being released by Barnsley

Max Watters has been snapped up by Port Vale after being released by Barnsley.

The 27-year-old was recruited by the Reds in January 2023, joining on loan from Cardiff City in a deal that was turned permanent later in the year. It was a switch that took Watters, who represented Doncaster Rovers between 2018 and 2020, back to Yorkshire.

He made a total of 84 appearances across all competitions for Barnsley, scoring 14 goals. The frontman spent the last year of his Reds contract on loan at Dundee United, netting on five occasions across 32 appearances north of the border.

Watters has now returned to English football, penning a two-year deal at Port Vale having seen his Barnsley contract expire.

He told PVTV: “I think they expect hard work, dedication. I run my socks off all but I’ll always be in the box, I’ll always be trying to score goals. I’ll always try improve the team in any way I can.”

Max Watters’ time at Barnsley

Much was expected of Watters when he arrived at Oakwell, as he had impressed at third-tier level with Milton Keynes Dons.

After his signature was secured, Barnsley’s then-CEO Khaled El-Ahmad said:“We are pleased that Max has joined us here at Barnsley.

“He is a hungry young player with experience across the EFL and we’re looking forward to seeing him perform within Michael Duff’s system.

“It was important to strengthen the squad as soon as possible and we thank Cardiff City for working with us to get the move over the line.”

However, it did not work out as planned for the London-born attacker.

Barnsley cut ties with an array of players at the end of last season and are now ushering in a new era under Daniel Stendel.

His frontline has been bolstered by the signings of Amani Richards and Makenzie Kirk from Leicester City and Portsmouth respectively.
