Barnsley FC transfer latest: Reds sign highly-rated central defender from League Two outfit

BARNSLEY have completed the signing of Gillingham central defender Sam Gale for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has joined the Reds on a three-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further year.

Gale arrives at Oakwell following an impressive breakthrough campaign with Gillingham, where he was nominated for the EFL League Two Young Player of the Year award and was named the club's Young Player of the Season for 2025/26.

Gale came through the club's academy program and made his first-team debut in November 2021.

He had previously enjoyed loan spells at both Sheppey and Hastings United and had signed a new contract with the Kent club last term.

Head coach Daniel Stendel said: "We're very pleased to bring Sam to Barnsley.

"He is a young defender with excellent potential, but also someone who has already shown he can perform consistently in senior football.

"He has a strong mentality, is comfortable on the ball and has the physical attributes we look for in a centre-back. We believe he can continue his development here and become an important player for this football club in the years ahead."

Gale added: "It's such a good opportunity, it's one I couldn't turn down. I want to be here, I want to get to work."
