Bradford City 2 Peterborough United 0: Important contributions at both ends see Bantams through to quarter-finals

For the first time since thy mad it all the way to Wembley in 2013, Bradford City are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The Bantams doubled their goal tally under Michal Duff and maintained their record of not having conceded under Michal Duff to book their place with a 2-0 win over Peterborough United.

The remarkable defensive record is of course a collective effort as Jon McCracken pointed out before the match, but the Scotland goalkeeper produced two big moments at 1-0 to frustrate Posh, and the Bantams could have had more goals than Macaulay Gillesphey and Adam Phillips'.

After a slow start, Bradford went on to have a strong first half, with the only concern five cautions in the first 35 minutes to none from Peterborough, but their control of the game apart from a period at the start of the second half allowed them to substitute all but Gillesphey.

Former Bantam Brandon Khela's shot was wider than it looked from the angle of the away fans, and it was not a sign of things to come.

Bradford soon took control, Bobby Pointon having a shot blocked after Antoni Sarcevic dwelt too long on the ball he rolled to his captain.

Sarcevic was back in his preferred inside-right position with George Lapslie behind him in a reversal of Saturday's team and a hint as to who might replace Callum Connolly at home to Huddersfield Town at the weekend. That said, Lapslie will be suspended in the quarter-finals after he joined Gillesphey, Bobby Pointon, Connolly and Welch in the book as referee Thomas Kirk got rather card happy in the first half.

As was the case last time Bradford played Posh, Gillesphey scored from a Connolly corner. The shape on the 13th-minute flag kick was lovely, and the recalled centre-back volleyed in from close range at the back post.

Welch headed wide at the next corner and Corey O'Keefe curled in a beautiful delivery Jake Beesley was not quite able to get on the end of.

The Bantams ought to have had a second in the 40th minute. Welch's ball forward to Beesley certainly deserved one but the striker's touch just forced Pointon slightly wide, although he still should not have given Alex Bass the chance to save.

He made another from Ibou Touray.

Lucca Mendonça needed a good tackle to stop Beesley bursting through but Posh were their own worst enemy at the end of the half, Ethan Williams' shot hitting a team-mate.

From there the task for a team who had gone six games without conceding was to keep a clean sheet, but it was easier said than done with Peterborough re-merging for the second half with much more about them.

McCracken, unbeaten since Gillesphey put an own goal past him in the last round, mad a good low save at his near post from Owura Edwards, then did well coming out to the feet of Vernon Massara.

He got his reward when an Edwards shot bounced off Connolly and onto the woodwork.

Harley Mills and Matthew Garbett both had wild shots.

Having already made two substitutions, Duff threw on two more to force the issue, and both had an impact.

Will Swann played a lovely pass to Phillips, but like from the on Aden Baldwin played a minute earlier, his heavy touch let him down.

But Phillips won the ball high and exchanged passes with Beesley for the 67th-minut goal that sealed it.

Bass tackled Swann as he tried to take the ball around the goalkeeper and produced a good tip-over to deny Beesley when he shifted the ball for a right-footed shot from a Kieran Morgan pass.

Mendonca cleared off the line from Phillips, who had a second go after his initial air-shot from Toure's ball in after 86 minutes.

Connolly then produced some excellent defending to deny Boku Shofowoke in the 90th minute.

The hard-working Beesley was denied twice in stoppage time but the job had already been done by a team showing signs of coming together under Duff's management.
