Ex-Sheffield United, Rotherham United and Portsmouth man becomes free agent at 39 as he leaves non-league club

Former Sheffield United and Rotherham United utility man Greg Halford has left non-league outfit Hashtag United.

The 39-year-old has spent the last two years with the minnows, who compete on the seventh rung of the English football ladder in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

However, he has confirmed via X, formerly Twitter, that he is moving on. Halford said: “The time has come to announce I'm leaving Hashtag United. I made the decision before the season ended and that's why I wasn't at @TST7v7 [7-aside tournament] this year.

"I'd like to thank everyone associated with the club particularly Spencer Owen [Hashtag’s chairman]. I wish the club all the best for the future.”

A veteran of the EFL, Halford is a Championship promotion winner with Cardiff City and counts the likes of Sheffield United and Rotherham among his former clubs.

He first moved to Yorkshire in 2008, spending one season on loan at Sheffield United from Sunderland. Halford returned to the county in 2015, signing for Rotherham and spending two years at the New York Stadium.

The former Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest defender dropped into the non-league pyramid in 2022, joining Billericay Town. He later joined Hashtag, a club established by YouTube star Spencer Owen.

They have enjoyed a meteoric rise through the divisions and are now one promotion away from the National League South.
