Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury hails ruthless Terriers and why his players wanted five goals and not three at Bradford City

HUDDERSFIELD Town head coach Martin Drury hailed the 'ruthless' finishing of his Terriers side after they secured a sweet 3-0 League One derby success at Bradford City - to consolidate top spot.

A fabulous acrobatic strike from Joe Low put Town in front early on and quick-fire goals early in the second period from danger duo Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Joe Taylor sealed victory, sending Town's sell-out 2,755 contingent into raptures as Drury's side sauntered to their fourth successive league win.

On the win, Drury, a former Bantams coach, said: "I felt the first half was quite a poor game of football.

"It was a typical derby in terms of the types of things that were happening. Quite a lot of long balls and second balls, that type of stuff. I thought Bradford started a little bit better than us.

"I know we scored, but I thought they started better than us. I thought they looked a little bit more connected than us in the first half and fed off their supporters quite well in the first half.

"I didn't think we were quite the level that we've come to expect from us. That being said, we go in at half-time 1-0. Then we talk at half-time about some things that we wanted to try and fix.

"We talked about mentality, character and some very subtle tactical things that we looked at in the first half, but then they changed at half-time, which surprised us a little bit. Second half, I thought we were much better. I thought we had more control.

"I thought we demonstrated more quality in key moments. I like the fact that we scored three different types of goals against today. That we attacked in different ways, a variety of ways, is a testament to the players.

"We didn't execute in certain moments where we could have scored goals in the first half. In the second half, the players showed their quality, that little bit more composure and conviction. We were ruthless.

"I think our first three shots of the game were goals, which shows a ruthless mentality about us. If you can't be at your very best in a game, particularly in local derby, where it's not going to be pristine and clean, then you have to find a way."

The one disappointment amid a dominant second period for Town was the fact that they didn't muster five goals.

Terriers players spoke about that feat ahead of the game, mindful that Bradford had conceded just five times in their opening 12 league fixtures, a remarkable defensive record.

Drury added: "The players came into the game with confidence.

"The players were speaking about trying to score five goals today because they wanted to try and double up what Bradford had conceded this season, which might sound a little bit left-field, and that's not to mean it in any disrespectful way whatsoever.

"In particular, I was pleased for our supporters today, who I thought were outstanding for us from start to finish. At times, it felt like a home game with the noise they were making. Hopefully, they enjoy the result today as much as we have."
