Notts County boss Martin Paterson has spoken ahead of a visit to his former employers Huddersfield Town

Notts County boss Martin Paterson has batted off the suggestion of any excitement about facing his former club Huddersfield Town.

The 39-year-old was a forward in his playing days and made 29 appearances for the Terriers between June 2013 and January 2015, scoring six goals.

He is now charge of Notts County, who will visit the League One table-topping Terriers tomorrow (September 5).

Martin Paterson on Huddersfield Town return

Paterson was asked if he was excited about the prospect of returning to the Accu Stadium but dismissed the idea of any nostalgic emotion.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: “I never get excited. I don’t know if you’re surprised at that. My prep is the same as it always will be. They’re obviously going very, very well - top of the league, I believe.

“We’ve prepared thoroughly. I do enjoy the games and the team at the moment is growing.

“I’ve been pleased with lots of elements but we also know there’s improvement to be made and what a great challenge to go there against a team that are a powerhouse of this division.”

Notts County’s draw at Doncaster Rovers

Notts County were in Yorkshire earlier this week, levelling in the second half to claim a 1-1 draw away at Doncaster Rovers.

Paterson said: “This division’s tough. This division’s really, really tough. Every week, I look and I go ‘tough’. Doncaster on Tuesday, we got back into the game but then didn’t stay calm.

“We almost tried too hard to win by playing too direct in moments when I thought we should have passed a little bit more. There’s always improvement to be made.

“We’re not looking behind us, we look at Huddersfield as a game in isolation. We look forward to it but we know how tough it will be. We’ll prepare, I know that.”
