GEORGE Long was the hero as Hull reached the third round of the Papa John’s Trophy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Tigers’ goalkeeper Long saved two spot-kicks as the hosts prevailed 3-2 after a goalless draw in normal time.

Substitute Hakeeb Adelakun scored the winning penalty after Greg Docherty and Malik Wilks had missed for Grant McCann’s charges.

The first chance of the game fell to Chris Porter, but Long tipped his header away.

James Scott saw his curling effort kept out by Dave Richards after being slipped in from Max Sheaf’s interception.

On the half hour mark Oli Finney lashed his effort into the side netting.

Hull squandered a great chance just before the break as Thomas Mayer’s strike went wide.

Lewie Coyle was the latest to be kept out by Richards, with this his best save, with 10 minutes left as the game went to penalties.

Finney blasted over for the visitors before Long denied both Griffiths and Offrande Zanzala.

Chris Porter and Perry Ng’s successful spot kicks were in vain. The hosts recovered after Docherty’s missed with Billy Chadwick and Coyle making no mistake. Wilks saw his potential winner saved by Richards before Adelakun wrapped it up.
