Leeds United outcast Max Wober 'completes' medical ahead of move to Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04

Max Wober is reportedly edging closer to a permanent move away from Leeds United

Leeds United outcast Max Wober is reportedly closing in on a move to Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.

The 28-year-old defender was a high-profile signing for the Whites back in January 2023, when he was recruited from Red Bull Salzburg in his native Austria.

Leeds were relegated within months of his arrival and he was among the players who departed on loan in the aftermath of the heartbreak.

He returned from a spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach to play a bit-part role in Leeds’ Championship promotion-winning 2025/26 campaign, but left on loan again last summer.

Wober managed just three appearances during an injury-ravaged campaign at Werder Bremen and now appears set for a permanent move away from Elland Road.

Max Wober nears Leeds United exit

According to Sky Sports Germany, Bundesliga newcomers Schalke are in advanced talks with Leeds over a deal for the centre-back.

Wober, who can also play at left-back, is said to have completed a medical having already arrived in Germany.

Reports of an exit being close have emerged after the Austria international was left out of Leeds’ squad for their pre-season tour of the USA. Also absent from the squad list are Jack Harrison, Largie Ramazani and Joe Gelhardt, who all spent time out on loan last season.

Sky Sports’ Dirk Schlarmann has claimed Wober’s contract at Elland Road will be terminated to pave the way for his fresh start in Germany.

Leeds United’s defensive options

A reintegration at Leeds always looked unlikely for the defender, who is below Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and new signing Tarik Muharemović in the pecking order.

Whites boss Daniel Farke also has the option of using midfielder Ethan Ampadu in the heart of defence having deployed him there in the Championship.

Even if Leeds do not pocket a fee for the defender, they will be getting a well-paid player off the wage bill.
