Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle makes admission over Leeds United 'intensity' after Premier League loss

Matthias Jaissle has assessed his Newcastle United side’s 4-1 loss to Leeds United

Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle conceded his side could not match Leeds United’s intensity following their 4-1 loss at Elland Road.

The Magpies were utterly outclassed last night (September 14), as a confident Leeds ran riot on their home turf.

An own goal from Lewis Miley put Leeds ahead and the Whites put the game beyond doubt with goals from Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor.

Matthias Jaissle’s frank verdict

Jaissle could do little but admit his side failed to reach the required standards and pointed to Leeds’ intensity as a key factor.

He said: “Not only one thing went wrong. The first half was disappointing, definitely, because we couldn't bring the fundamentals in football on the pitch.

“Duel behaviour, the intensity of Leeds we couldn't match, and then yeah, you see that it's going to be difficult to win a game in the Premier League. As I said to the lads that we were aware of that already a couple of weeks ago.

“With a young squad, we will have challenges. We will have ups and downs. Today it was a big down, a tough night with a heavy defeat. But that's exactly the way to learn out of it with a young squad.

“That's always the most important thing that you show now the right reaction, and we can do that already on Saturday.”

Leeds United’s strong start

The win ensured Leeds are still unbeaten in the Premier League this season having fulfilled four fixtures. They have ascended to third in the table after two wins and two draws, level on points with fourth-placed Hull City.

Daniel Farke has been at the Leeds helm since 2023 and the Whites looked like a side well-attuned with his philosophy.

Newcastle, meanwhile, looked every inch a side under new management following Jaissle’s appointment in the summer.
