Tarik Muharemović has admitted Leeds United’s Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea “hurts” - even though it was “special” to score his first competitive goal for the club.

The 23-year-old headed Leeds into the lead at Stamford Bridge and the advantage was doubled by Brenden Aaronson.

Chelsea made four substitutions at half-time and managed to turn the game on its head, advancing into the fourth round as 6-3 victors.

Tarik Muharemović shares message

With the dust settling on the cup exit, Muharemović has shared a message via Instagram.

He said: “A night I’ll never forget, even if I wish it had ended differently. Scoring my first competitive goal for Leeds at Stamford Bridge is a special feeling, but right now the result hurts more than anything.

“We gave everything, but that’s football. We take the positives, learn from it and keep going. Full focus on Monday and the league. There’s still a lot ahead of us. Together. Always!”

Tarik Muharemović’s start to life at Leeds United

Muharemović has made a strong start to life at Elland Road since his £34m move from Sassuolo in the summer transfer window.

He was said to be of interest to Arsenal, but it was the Whites who won the race for the Bosnia & Herzegovina international’s signature.

The centre-back has looked incredibly assured, already starting to vindicate Leeds’ decision to fork out a hefty fee for his signature.

In August, he said: “It feels amazing since I arrived, really. The love I get from the guys, from the staff, from the coaches, it is really special. How they welcome you, first of all, and then how we train.

“We really work hard every day and we know what team we are going to expect. We just want to show our qualities, to show our best sides and we go on step by step and achieve our goals.”
