Leeds reunion holds no meaning – Schmeichel

The 25-year-old left Elland Road during the summer to join Leicester City and at the time spoke of his “great disappointment” at how the move had come about.

Schmeichel also accused Leeds of forcing him out of the club, which brought a stinging reply from Simon Grayson who said the decision had been taken for “footballing reasons” and that the club were looking at “better” alternatives.

Andy Lonergan was later signed from Preston North End for £200,000 and his performances have since justified Grayson’s words.

Ahead of this weekend’s reunion with his former club in a game that has been put back 24 hours due to Leicester Tigers’ rugby union club being in action today, Schmeichel is adamant that the game is of no greater significance than any other.

He said: “I hadn’t even thought about Leeds. In fact, Neil Danns reminded me it was Leeds on Sunday after the Burnley game because I didn’t realise.

“I have just been so focused on what I am doing with Leicester and everything that has been going on.

“There is no bad feeling. I am so happy to be at Leicester. That is all in the past and there is no point living in the past.

“I am really happy I am here and enjoying every minute I am here. This is a new chapter for me.”

Schmeichel’s replacement at Elland Road will not be in action tomorrow due to Lonergan having dislocated a finger in last month’s 3-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.

He is not expected back until the end of November so instead new signing Alex McCarthy will start following his loan switch from Reading.

The England Under-21 international was drafted in by Grayson yesterday following another poor display by Lonergan’s deputy, Paul Rachubka, in the midweek thrashing by Blackpool.

McCarthy has found himself confined to the bench this season due to the impressive form of Adam Federeci but United fans will remember his impressive display at Elland Road in April when Reading earned a goalless draw.

United manager Grayson said: “I would like to thank Reading manager Brian McDermott for allowing Alex to come to us.

“They are keen for him to play games and, hopefully, his loan spell will help his development.”
