Premier League and EFL weekend talking points: Leeds United youngsters, World Cup hamstrings, LIam Rosenior's return and last Championship table for a month amongst five things to watch

This football weekend will be the last “normal” one this side of Christmas, so there are plenty of things to watch out for.

With the Premier League about to go on hold until Boxing Day (Leeds United are not back until the 28th) and the Championship until December 10, how things look when the music stops on Sunday evening will be of added significance.

And the fact it is stopping for football’s first winter World Cup throws added elements into the pot.

But the short-term always matters more, and all 11 Yorkshire sides will have important league points to play for, and big decisions to make.

SAM GREENWOOD AND WILLY GNONTO

Youngsters Sam Greenwood and Willy Gnonto have made a big impact in Leeds’s back-to-back Premier League wins which take them to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in good heart despite their midweek League Cup exit.

Neither started the game at Wolverhampton Wanderers but both came off the bench. With Marc Roca's form dipping lately and Jesse Marsch still looking for the right attacking combinations up front, is it a sign their legs were being saved for Saturday?

Chief football writer Stuart Rayner will be in London to see if Leeds can win three straight league games for the first time since May 2021.

With not everyone as fit as manager Gareth Southgate would like, the chances are that not all of his 26 World Cup picks will play at the weekend, but most will. Every time one of them goes into a tackle, England fans will be holding their breath.

Even if Kyle Walker is fit for Manchester City, his club-mate Kalvin Phillips is probably the most in need of minutes, though fellow Yorkshireman Harry Maguire could certainly do with some too. City play Brentford in the first game of the Premier League weekend and Maguire’s Manchester United are at Fulham in the last.

In many cases, though, England fans would probably rather those bound for Qatar had a weekend off, especially Tottenham’s "really, really tired" Harry Kane. As Southgate knows only too well, though, persuading the centre-forward not to play is very hard indeed.

With two Premier League games on Sunday, those who do pick up injuries might be struggling to have them properly assessed before the World Cup squads have to officially be confirmed to FIFA on Monday.

This farce is by no means just an English problem. Most European leagues including all the big ones are playing at the weekend, although at least Spain has organised a cup week.

CAN ROSENIOR TURN HULL'S HOME FORM?

New Hull City coach Liam Rosenior has made a good start with a 0-0 draw with ten men at Millwall followed up by a 3-2 win at Cardiff City.

But ahead of the visit of Reading, Hull's home form is a big concern, losing six of their last seven matches there (they beat Wigan Athletic).

Hopefully the feel-good factor of a new coach who served the club so well as a player brings a big and supportive crowd to make the difference. Leon Wobschall will be there to report back for The Yorkshire Post.

LANCASHIRE DERBY DECISIVE FOR BLADES?

A midweek win would have guaranteed Sheffield United would go into the World Cup break top of the Championship with victory at Cardiff City but after an excellent Rotherham United side had other ideas and it is now impossible.

On top of doing their own job, the Blades will need a winner from Sunday's game between Burnely and Blackburn Rovers to be in the top two positions until the division resumes on December 10.

BOTTOM AT THE BREAK?

Even after Tuesday's fantastic win at Queens Park Rangers, the chances of Huddersfield Town not being bottom for the lay-off are not great.

They must get back-to-back wins for the first time this season at home to Swansea City, and hope either managerless Wigan lose at home to struggling Blackpool or Carlos Corberan's West Bromwich Albion lose at home to Stoke City.

Even if both do, the Terriers will still be in the relegation zone by the time they ravel to Bramall Lane deep into Advent.
