'Not taking our chances' - Grant McCann bemoans profligacy as Doncaster Rovers slump to bottom

Doncaster Rovers missed plenty of chances as Myles Hippolyte’s superb free-kick was enough to earn AFC Wimbledon a 1-0 win that dumps Grant McCann’s side to the foot of League One.

Jack Senior was picked out in the box by a Leon Ayinde cutback early in the first half, but he fired wide of the left post from close range.

Senior forced Josef Bursik into action in the 15th minute, with the Dons goalkeeper getting down quickly to keep the ball out of the bottom-right corner.

The visiting fans thought their side had taken the lead in the 19th minute when Owen Bailey tapped in a free-kick delivery from close range, but referee Elliott Swallow judged there had been a foul in the build-up.

AFC Wimbledon took the lead against the run of play when Hippolyte curled a sublime free-kick into the top-left corner in the 43rd minute.

Senior almost got his side back on level terms on the stroke of half-time but his half-volley from distance was tipped over the crossbar by Bursik.

Bursik denied Senior from close range before turning an Isaac Hutchinson free-kick around the post at the start of the second half.

Jordan Thomas curled an effort over the crossbar as the visitors continued their hunt for an equaliser, but it never came.

Rovers are now rooted to the bottom with just three points to their name.

Doncaster manager McCann insisted his side should have scored two or three goals.

“The amount of opportunities we have created here today, we should have had two or maybe three goals,” he added.

“We don’t and it just feels like at this moment in time we are not taking our chances.

“Particularly when we are on top, I thought we were on top for the whole of the first half.

“We had numerous opportunities to score but at this moment in time it’s coming off our heel.

“It’s not like we haven’t got players in the changing room that can score goals.

“I feel like we have the best number nine in League One (Alfie May), he has proved that over the last five or six years.

“At this moment in time, everything just seems to be rushed.

“From a performance point of view, to come to Wimbledon and control most of the game like we did is pleasing, but like I say, we are angry and hurting again because we have lost another football game.”
