'Proven me wrong' - York City manager makes admission over scorer in rout of Swindon

York boss Scott Lindsey has claimed telling in-form attacker Alex Newby he would not get in his team this season was his “best ever piece of management”.

Injures in the Minstermen’s attacking department have given Newby his chance and a brace during a 4-0 thumping of 10-man Swindon took the former Colchester winger’s tally to six goals for the new campaign.

Ollie Banks and Ollie Pearce joined Newby on the scoresheet and, assessing the latter’s early-season impact, Lindsey said: “In the first half, he was measured at having completed 700m of high-speed

running, which is touching on incredible, and that’s why we substituted him because, with that output, I didn’t want him to pull a hamstring and be out for eight weeks.

“Telling him I didn’t think he could get in my team this season was probably my best ever piece of management, because he’s proven me wrong and I love the character he’s shown to do that. It’s early days, but he’s on course for an incredible season.

“I’m really proud of him and what a strike his first goal was. He came from nowhere to smash it in.”

Lindsey added that he felt the performance was the best since he replaced Stuart Maynard in the summer.

“The players were magnificent,” he enthused. “It’s the best we’ve played by a country mile and we’ve played well in every game so far, but that was an outstanding performance from start to finish with unbelievable goals as well. I can’t say anything more other than it was brilliant.”
