Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur among clubs 'vying' to strike deal for £12m Stoke City star

Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs battling to sign Wouter Burger from Stoke City.

The Potters endured a largely forgettable 2023/24 season but Burger was a bright light, standing out with his midfield displays on a regular basis. His form appears to have attracted attention, with Sheffield United among the clubs said to be keen.

According to TEAMtalk, four clubs are vying for Burger’s signature with the Blades among them. Tottenham are also said to be an interested party, while the report suggests a bid of £12m could prise Burger from the Potters.

Sheffield United are in need of a rebuild after tumbling out of the Premier League without much of a fight. Blades boss Chris Wilder has signalled his intention to be brutal with his reshaping and five senior players have already been confirmed to be departing.

Chris Basham is seeking pastures new after a decade of service, while Wes Foderingham, George Baldock, Max Lowe and Oliver Norwood are also leaving Bramall Lane.

Although just 23, Burger boasts impressive experience and amassed 39 league appearances for Stoke last season. He has also represented the likes of Feyenoord and Basel at senior level, while he has also collected youth caps for the Netherlands.
