Ben Brereton Diaz has revealed why he joined Sheffield United despite reports of Derby County and Stoke City interest

Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz pondered who would get the best out of him before sealing a third loan move to Sheffield United.

The 27-year-old was reported to be of interest to Derby County and Stoke City, two clubs he has previously represented.

However, it was the Blades who raced to the front of the queue and signed the forward on loan for a third time.

Ben Brereton Diaz explains Sheffield United choice

Explaining the decision to return to the red side of the Steel City, Brereton Diaz told the Sheffield United website: “It's a great club. The fans are great and the two times I've been here, I've absolutely loved it. For me, it was a year on loan, who's going to get the best out of me? I feel like I'll fit straight in.

“He (Chris Wilder) obviously knows what I'm about and what I can bring to the group, but I just want to help the lads out.

“I know this group's experienced, it's got some familiar faces that I was with before, so I'm really excited to meet the new lads. It's looking like a great squad and I'm excited to get involved with the lads.

“I'm really excited. When I first got to the club, obviously I was really, really excited to come back for the third time with the gaffer and knowing the lads, so I'm really delighted and happy.

“Me and the gaffer have got a great relationship. He's done great in his career and for me, I've played for him twice already at Sheffield United, so I'm buzzing to come back again and play for him.”

Firepower required

Brereton Diaz has arrived at Bramall Lane with the club in need of firepower in the final third. Wilder’s men are two games into their Championship campaign, but are yet to score having played out goalless draws with Birmingham City and Swansea City.

The Blades will be hoping to get on the scoresheet for the first time this afternoon (August 29), when they visit Cardiff City.
