Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers 'exploring' deal for ex-Chelsea and Evertong goalkeeper Asmir Begovic
Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers have been credited with interest in a veteran goalkeeper
Sheffield United are reportedly exploring a deal to sign veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
The 39-year-old is among the most experienced figures on the free agent market following the expiry of his contract at Leicester City.
A member of Chelsea’s 2016/17 Premier League-winning squad, the Bosnian has represented the likes of Everton, AC Milan, Stoke City and AFC Bournemouth.

Sheffield United linked with Asmir Begovic
According to reporter Darren Witcoop, the seasoned stopper is being looked at by Sheffield United.
Newly-promoted Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers are also said to be interested in Begovic, who is thought to be weighing up his options.
Posting on X, Witcoop said: “Championship clubs Sheffield United and Bolton exploring a deal for goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. The Bosnian is weighing up his next move after leaving Leicester on a free transfer.”
Sheffield United have one of the Championship’s most revered goalkeepers on their books in former Plymouth Argyle star Michael Cooper.
However, if Ivo Grbic departs this summer as expected, the Blades could be left with Adam Davies as Cooper’s only senior competitior.
Even though Begovic has won 63 caps for Bosnia & Herzegovina, he would qualify as a ‘homegrown player’ having joined Portsmouth as a teenager.

Sheffield United’s summer transfer dealings
Sheffield United endured a dismal 2025/26 campaign, falling way short of pre-season expectations and finishing 13th in the Championship.
There has not been a flurry of new arrivals at Bramall Lane, with defender Matt Doherty and winger Romelle Donovan the only new faces through the door as it stands.
On the potential outgoings front, there are huge doubts over the future of defender Mark McGuinness, while Coventry City are being linked with midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
Sheffield United are due to kick off their Championship campaign against Birmingham City on August 15.
