Coventry City 'in talks' with Sheffield United over potential Gustavo Hamer reunion

Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer has been linked with a move back to Coventry City

Coventry City are reportedly in talks with Sheffield United over a potential reunion with Gustavo Hamer.

It was the Sky Blues who first brought Hamer to British shores, signing the combative midfielder from PEC Zwolle in 2020.

He went on to make 132 appearances for Coventry, endearing himself to the club’s supporters before being lured away by Sheffield United in 2023.

Speculation regarding Hamer’s future at Bramall Lane has been persistent in recent years, fuelled by Sheffield United’s on-field struggles.

Leeds United have been linked with the 29-year-old on a number of occasions, but a move to Elland Road has not materialised.

Sky Sports have now claimed Coventry are eyeing a reunion with Hamer following their promotion to the Premier League.

A move back to the Midlands could prove tempting for Hamer, who could find the lure of Premier League football irresistible.

There is also an emotional appeal, which could make it harder for Sheffield United to hold on to their asset. Hamer has just one year remaining on his contract in South Yorkshire.

Chris Wilder’s stance

In April, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was quizzed about reports indicating Hamer and fellow midfielder Sydie Peck could be sold this summer.

He said: "If we have to sell a player or two, then we will do as long as we don't give them away. That's my take on it. We have to raise money.

"The owners put a lot of money in to buy the football club. They put a lot of money in, in terms of the investment they put in at the start of the season. If that's the case, then that's the case.

"I'm okay with that, but we can't develop these players and just let them go for nothing. We can't buy players and let them go cheaply or not at a price where we don't think it's the right price for us. We're in a situation where the majority of clubs in this division have to recoup. You've all seen the numbers.”
