Ipswich Town v Sheffield United: Ruben Selles' Blades set to unveil reboot after review

PORTMAN ROAD, Ipswich, should see Ruben Selles' Sheffield United 2.0 after a winless start to his managerial tenure was followed by a frantic end to the transfer window.

Selles says the last-minute trolley-dash for players was separate to a review of the first five games of the campaign – during which they went out of the League Cup and became the only club in the Football League yet to win a point this season.

But there will be changes in approach too as they emerge from a two-week international break with a televised game at Ipswich Town.

"The strategy for the transfer window was already set, the other thing was the review of our performances," explained Selles, who faced calls for his sacking from the away end after the last game, at Middlesbrough.

"The first thing we did after the last game was to deeply analyse our performances in the first four (league) games in terms of the games, what has been going in the direction we want and what has not, but also in terms of statistics and clips.

"After that deep analysis, we reached a conclusion that we need to adjust and adapt, not only to the next opponent but for the future.

"We try to do it (review) every six games – that makes the (conclusions) more reliable – but because of the international break, we adjusted it. The international break gives you a good period to review."

Of the 12 senior players the Blades signed this summer, only loanees Djibril Soumare, Louie Barry and Tyler Bindon arrived before the season began. Alex Matos, Tahith Chong, Japhet Tanganga, Ben Mee, Danny Ings, Mark McGuinness and Chiedoze Ogbene joined in the final five days of trading.

Of the seven seniors who left, captain Jack Robinson, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Kieffer Moore, Vinicius Souza and Rhian Brewster started May's Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

The club's entire roster of central defenders has changed, and three more arriving than left has led some to wonder if the new-look side will play with three centre-backs.

Until now they have played a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, as Hull City tended to when Selles was there last season.

"If that is a change of formation or not, we will see on Friday night,” is all Selles would say.

"We need to find a way to be more vertical (direct) and to make our attacks faster to avoid the opponent just setting up their defence.

"We actually (changed approach) twice at Reading, and at Hull. At Reading, we changed from an ultra-aggressive formation to go to the press with one less player because in League One, the approach was different.

"When we went to the Championship with Hull we decided to change our way to defend because we invested a lot in the first pressure but conceded a lot of situations that they (opponents) bypassed.

“We need to make a variation but that can mean multiple things – change the formation, change the personnel, a little bit of everything."

Ogbene and Zatterstrom have been away with the Republic of Ireland and Sweden Under-21s.

Tahith Chong, who did not train with the team before his debut from the bench at Middlesbrough, left to play for Curacao in World Cup qualifiers in Trinidad and Tobago and at home to Bermuda on Wednesday UK time. Tylor Bindon was due to fly in on Thursday afternoon or evening after playing for New Zealand against Australia home and away.

Sydie Peck made his England Under-21 debut from the bench in Monday's 2-0 win in Kazakhstan.

That will come into Selles’ thinking in terms of physical preparedness, but he has kept them up to speed tactically.

"They are just texting myself, or sometimes one of the technical staff about the training they did (and) their feelings," he said.

"Then we pass on all the documents or presentations we do here for the rest of the team so they can watch it and then ask questions.

"So when they come back, from the first moment they know what we have been doing."
