Sheffield United release injury-prone midfielder
Sheffield United have announced midfielder Ton Davies will leave at the end of his contract.
The Blades signed the now-27-year-old when he was released by Everton in the summer of 2023 after he struggled with injuries, and they continued throughout his three-year contract at Bramall Lane.
Davies has made just 11 league starts in that time, and only 36 appearances in all competitions, the rest of them coming from the bench. The biggest problem he struggled with was his calf.
He only made six league starts in his final two years at Goodison Park.
The pity for the Blades is that, when on the field, his Premier League qualities were obvious but he was just not able to bring them to bear often enough.
With no parachute payment to help them next season, the Blades will have to cut their wage bill and their bloated squad size for the 2026-27 season, so keeping Davies was never a realistic option, and news that he is to be released comes as no surprise.
Davies was a substitute at home to Swansea City on Good Friday, and now has four opportunities for a farewell appearance in red-and-white stripes.
He represented England through the various age groups, but not at senior level.
