Sheffield United transfer news: Blades go back to the future again for defensive signing

Sheffield United have turned to another old favourite to solve their issue at right-back with the signing of Hamza Choudhury.

Of the six players the Blades have signed this summer, four have come back for a second – or in Ben Brereton Diaz's case, third – spell as Chris Wilder sticks to what he knows to try to get the Blades out of the Championship this season.

When Choudhury joined the Blades on loan from Leicester City in the second half of 2024-25 it was probably still as a midfielder who could also play right-back, but he found his niche at Bramall Lane in the latter position and is now more of a right-back who can also play in midfield.

Sheffield United are well stocked in the middle of the park, having recently brought Kalvin Phillips back to add to a stable which includes Sydie Peck, Oliver Arblaster, Joe Rothwell and the re-signed Jairo Riedewald.

But an injury to Femi Seriki during last week's League Cup win at Blackburn Rovers left Wilder feeling vulnerable at right-back despite making free transfer Matt Doherty his first addition of the transfer window.

Chourhury make 19 appearances for the Blades in the second half of 2024-25, including starting 13 regular Championship games and all three play-off matches as they reached the final, but lost to Sunderland.

But the Bangladesh international has not been a regular since returning to Leicester, with only 17 of his 30 Championship appearances last season. With the Foxes looking to move on their higher earners in League One, he has played just 78 minutes, all from the bench, in 2026-27.

Choudhury's signing comes in time for him to make his debut at home to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

The Blades are still looking to sign one, ideally two, central defenders in this window. Their top target had been Chourdhury's club-mate Harry Souttar – another who had previously been at Bramall Lane – but they have been unable to agree a price for a player who could now go to Wrexham.

There have been talks with Adam Webster but as a free agent, he does not have to be signed before Tuesday's 11pm transfer deadline to be registered for the first half of the season.
