Sheffield Wednesday 1 Bury 0: Coke pops up with first goal to secure passage for Wednesday

Substitute Giles Coke grabbed his first goal for Sheffield Wednesday as Alan Knill's classy side wasted a hatful of chances.

Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver pulled of a series of saves to keep Bury at bay as the home side struggled to make any impact.

They had the ball in the net after just three minutes as Wednesday get off to a sluggish start, Michael Jones picking out striker Andy Bishop who had strayed into an offside position.

Jones watched as his cross-shot took a deflection curling wide of the far post before the Hillsborough side had another let off. Ryan Lowe threaded a precision pass to Bishop who squandered a golden opportunity from 10 yards when Weaver saved.

Wednesday were being outplayed by the slick moving Lancashire side and had to wait until the 34th minute for their first effort, John Otsemobor finding Neil Mellor who fired over the top from 20 yards. The Owls escaped again after Lowe found a gap but, as Darren Purse moved in, he dragged his low strike across the face of the goal. Andy Howarth then saw a shot on the turn go wide as Wednesday were booed off at the break.

Wednesday broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, Coke cutting inside from the left and riding two tackles as he lashed the ball into the far corner.

There were further scares for Owls, Purse almost deflected a Lowe cross into his own net, Bishop slammed a Howarth cross against the bar and Tom Lees was foiled by goalkeeper Weaver.
