Brighton 2 Sheffield Wednesday 0: Ten-man Brighton end Owls run

Sheffield Wednesday failed to make it three wins in a week when they lost out to League One leaders Brighton.

Chris Wood’s 44th minute penalty gave Brighton the edge in the first half.

Any hopes of an Owls fightback were ended when Elliott Bennett fired in a 25-yard effort with 15 minutes remaining.

It means Brighton have moved to within one win of League One automatic promotion.

The Owls had won their previous two games, but Wood put the hosts ahead from the spot after Danny Batth brought Glenn Murray down.

Elliott Bennett put the result beyond doubt with a fierce, crisp strike into the top corner.

The Seagulls’ Gordon Greer picked up a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident in the closing stages.
