Preston North End 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0 - player ratings

Tony Pulis began his reign as Sheffield Wednesday manager with a 1-0 defeat at Preston North End.

A 17th-minute red card for Josh Windass limited the Owls' ambition against a side who have struggled at home - not that they showed much when the game was 11-aside.

Liam Palmer – contributed to a solid defensive performance, although a first-half penalty appeal had him holding his breath 6

Tom Lees – rock-solid in the heart of defence 7

Julian Borner – made a crucial late interception to prevent a tap-in to double Preston's lead 7

Moses Odubajo – started out of position as a right-winger, finished out of position as a left-winger. He worked hard in both jobs but wasted Wednesday's only good chance of the second half 6

Callum Paterson – in a week which started with his new manager saying he was not a centre-forward, he played over an hour there, with precious little service 6

Massimo Luongo – worked hard on his return and got forward well a couple of times in the first half 7

Barry Bannan – the onus was on him to get forward from midfield in the second half but it was a difficult ask 5

Adam Reach – ran around and moved positions as usual 6
