The Black Cats are enjoying a new lease of life under Regis Le Bris, who has taken the club to the Championship summit. Across their opening 12 games, his side have lost just twice and managed to pick up nine wins.
Scott Parker’s Burnley, meanwhile, are five points adrift of top spot in second. The Clarets lost ground at the weekend, being held to a 0-0 draw by Queens Park Rangers.
Leeds also had to settle for a point, drawing 0-0 with Bristol City. Daniel Farke’s men sit third, one point ahead of Sheffield United. The Blades defeated Stoke City and would be above Leeds and Burnley had they not had points deducted.
Elsewhere, spoils were shared by two clubs in the play-off chasing pack as Norwich City and Middlesbrough played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. Sheffield Wednesday clinched an away win at Portsmouth, while Hull City drew 1-1 with Derby County.
