JUNIOR players from Hallamshire will be representing England in the Home Nations Championships final in Spain next year after being crowned national champions.

The team of six won the English national final at Studley Wood Golf Club, beating Burhill by two points and three other regional finalists in a closely-fought contest.

In wet and blustery conditions the Hallamshire team of Alex Fitzpatrick, Barclay Brown, Tom Bradley, Tom Naylor, Louie Hinchliffe and Alex Fox battened down the hatches to record some impressive scores.

Brown, an England Under-16 international, shot the best gross score of the day with a five-under-par 68 – seven strokes ahead of the second-best scorer, Jeong Sim of Burhill.

Hallamshire junior organiser, Bill Thomas, said: “It was a difficult day for golf but the boys were outstanding. Our juniors won the national final in 2007 and this team is looking forward to representing club and country again in Spain next year.”

The Home Nations Inter-Club Championship – contested between England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales – will be held over five days at Antequera GC near Malaga from March 5-11 and will be a feature of a 90-minute Sky Sports broadcast later in the year.

The Championship will move into its 22nd year in 2016. More than 1,300 clubs with 650,000 members compete each year seeking to progress from the regional to national finals in the ope of representing their country.
