MOORTOWN’S Stephen East made a bold charge in an attempt to earn his fourth English Open Mid Amateur title, at Northumberland GC.

But Durham’s Richard Aisbitt had too much in hand and finished six shots clear of the field to complete an impressive wire-to-wire victory.

Aisbitt scored a closing two-under 70 to finish the 54-hole event at six under par.

The runner-up was his playing partner and friend, the host club’s Andrew Minnikin, who in turn was one clear of East.

Yorkshire Seniors champion East (74 73 70) produced an early surge when he birdied the third and fifth holes while sandwiching in between an eagle 3 at the par-5 507-yard fourth.

A birdie at the 8th redressed a bogey at the sixth, and he was out in four-under 33.

However, he was unable to maintain the momentum and after bogeys at 10 and 18 coming home had to settle for a closing 70.

Lindrick’s Jamie Shepherd tied for 10th (77 71 74). He accumulated 15 pars, but only one birdie, at the fourth.

Jamie Miller (Fulford) placed 13th (73 77 73), his final round a quiet affair with two birdies and three bogeys accompanying 13 pars.

Pike Hills’ Martin Brown birdied the third, but gave the shot back straight away at the next and finished tied for 25th (75 80 75).

Bradley Park’s Edward Battye (75 77 79) was among those sharing 27th place after dropping four shots in his first six holes.

He birdied both eight and 18, but carded three bogeys in a row from the 11th as well as a double at 15.
