Olympics overnight (Tuesday): Another set of medals for the Brits
Here, we reflect on Monday’s action and look ahead to today:
* Charlotte Dujardin successfully defended her individual dressage title after a sizzling performance that matched the heat in Deodoro. The 31-year-old has now equalled cyclist Laura Trott in winning three Olympic gold medals. Dujardin won with the brilliant Valegro on an Olympic record grand prix freestyle score of 93.857 per cent, as they obliterated the field.

After eight years of trying and at the third time of asking, Cavendish finished second behind Italy’s Elia Viviani, while defending champion Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark took bronze. A mid-race crash appeared to be of Cavendish’s own making, but no protest from his rivals was forthcoming and he was able to stand on the podium to receive his silver medal.
* Burnley’s Sophie Hitchon broke the British record with her final throw of the competition to land an historic hammer bronze. The former ballet dancer launched the hammer out to 74.54 metres to move from sixth place to third and become the first British woman to win an Olympic medal in the discipline. In fact, Hitchon is the first British man or woman to win an Olympic hammer medal since 1924.
* Britain’s women made it six wins out of six in the hockey competition, beating Spain 3-1 to reach Wednesday’s semi-final against New Zealand.
* Keri-anne Payne missed out on a medal in the marathon swimming. The 28-year-old, who won silver in Beijing in 2008 and finished fourth at London 2012, was seventh in the women’s 10-kilometre final in one hour 57 minutes 23.9 seconds, 51.8 secs behind winner Sharon van Rouwendaal of Holland.
