Yorkshire duo Stan Moody and Liam Pullen set for Crucible debuts after Judgement Day victories

Snooker’s Judgement Day is guaranteed to bring drama in the race for a Crucible spot in the World Championship.

And Yorkshire duo Liam Pullen and Stan Moody certainly added to the many storylines after coming through the final round of qualifiers at Sheffield’s Institute of Sport on Tuesday to secure their Crucible debuts.

York’s Pullen fell agonisingly short of a £147,000 bonus for a double maximum, in his 10-8 win over Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham.

While on the neighbouring table, Halifax teenager Moody was struggling through a bout of tonsillitis, which included a hospital visit, to beat China's Jiang Jun 10-9.

Now both will be in Thursday’s main draw with a Crucible debut to look forward to.

Both Pullen and Moody led 5-4 from the opening morning session of their best-of-19 contests.

Pullen, pictured, will wonder how he was not further ahead after some heavy scoring.

The 20-year-old produced two century breaks, 131 and 105, with further scores of 58, 54 and 83.

But he missed out on a £147,000 bonus for making two maximum breaks across snooker's four majors this season.

Having already composed a maximum in UK Championship qualifying, Pullen looked poised for the cash windfall in frame five.

But on a break of 105, he missed the 14th black after an attempted thin cut, and had to console himself with a 4-1 lead.

Saengkham managed to win three of the next four frames – including a clearance of 80 after a missed red from Pullen – to cut the deficit to one frame heading into the evening session.

It was the Yorkshireman who won the opening two frames on resumption, including a break of 54, to lead 7-4. It looked set to be 8-4, but Pullen faltered on 57, allowing his opponent to produce a 75 clearance.

This was a high quality match, Pullen firing in a 73 break, Saengkham replying with 84 and 90 to draw level at 8-8.

But it was Pullen who held his nerve with breaks of 50 and 54 to clinch victory.

Nineteen-year-old Moody – on antibiotics to combat tonsillitis, he discharged himself from hospital to play at the EIS – shrugged off a slow start, coming from 3-1 down to lead Jiang with breaks of 71, 53 and 51.

He looked set to lead 6-3, but it was Jiang who knocked in a 53 break in the last frame of the session.

The pair traded the opening four frames of the evening session. Jiang took the first two, before breaks of 71, 70 and 113 saw the Halifax cueman lead.

But Jiang clawed two frames back to draw level at 8-8.

But century breaks from Moody – 127 and 104 – saw the teenager emerge a 10-9 winner.

Wednesday sees Leeds potter Oliver Lines looking to secure his Crucible debut in the second part of Judgement Day.

The 30-year-old has never played at the Sheffield theatre, but has impressed this week at the EIS.

The world No 58 beat Mark Lloyd in his opening qualifier, before coming out on top in a marathon encounter with Ben Woollaston on Monday night.

The match was locked at 8-8, with Lines failing to make a break over 50.

But the Yorkshireman finally got in the points, with back-to-back breaks of 56 and 68 to win 10-8.

On Wednesday he plays Liam Highfield, who knocked out Stephen Maguire in the previous round.
