Barrow Raiders 42 Hunslet Hawks 24: Battling Hunslet go out as Raiders shine

HUNSLET Hawks battled hard but came up just short as they exited the Challenge Cup to Championship champions Barrow.

The hosts took a 12-0 lead early on as they looked to assert their dominance, Nathan Mossop and Liam Campbell breaking away for the hosts to score a try with only nine minutes gone.

Hunslet were soon on the front foot, Waine Price having two chances to go in before Tommy Haughey did just that after a short pass from David March right on the line.

After holding out for 18 minutes, Hunslet buckled as Ned Catic, Campbell and Andy Ballard all crossed in quick succession.

Almost immediately, there was renewed determination from the Hawks as Joe Helme barged in near the sticks to narrow the gap to 30-10 at the break.

Barrow eventually scored the first points of the half as Michael Knowles crossed after being played in by Liam Harrison, the margin now starting to get comfortable at 36-10.

The Hawks were not about to give in though and were given four penalties on the Barrow line, Price going in after the last of them to cut the gap to 36-14.

Neil Lowe soon followed him over the whitewash after being played in by a Richard Chapman break near the line and that comfortable lead for the home team was significantly less so now at 36-20.

It was only two scores as Lowe was stopped on the line between the posts, but Michael Mark went in at the corner, the Hawks well and truly on top of affairs and with every chance of causing an upset.

Those thoughts were wiped out with three minutes to go though as Zeb Luisi faked his way in to seal victory for Barrow and knock out the battling Hawks.
