Castleford Tigers did fans 'disservice' and some gave up in Huddersfield Giants drubbing, admits Luke Robinson

Luke Robinson admits certain individuals gave up in the closing stages of a sorry season for Castleford Tigers.

The Tigers ended the campaign second bottom after suffering a 48-16 drubbing at the hands of 12-man Huddersfield Giants on Saturday afternoon.

Robinson, who swapped one scrap at Huddersfield for another with Castleford, spared a thought for the long-suffering travelling supporters following a 19th defeat that left the club with the worst attacking and defensive records in Super League.

"I felt really, really sorry for the Cas fans," he said.

"They were brilliant in the first 20 minutes singing and shouting despite the season they've had – and the lads did them a disservice.

"It just wasn't good enough. A lot needs changing and the club are aware of that. Things need to change, pretty much in every department.

"We've got a real strong fanbase, it's a mad rugby town and they deserve a really good rugby side. I told the playing group that they need to strap themselves in because this season hasn't been good enough for the club's vision. For the lads that are going to be here next year, that's not acceptable.

"I don't think all the players have given up but do I think some of them have? Yeah. Fans know when individuals are fighting tooth and nail for themselves, their mates and the badge – and that hasn't happened."

Saturday's hosts appeared destined for the wooden spoon before turning the form book on its head.

A sixth win in eight games secured a 12th-place finish for the Giants and ensured a happy ending to their Accu Stadium story.

Jim Lenihan's side scored eight tries despite Fenton Rogers' red card before half-time.

"It's a really nice touch to finish with a win," said Lenihan, who spent a season with the club as a player in 1999. "You want to be the person who had the last dance on here and made sure we got it right.

"The win was important but the effort that went into the win was really important. Once you go down to 12, that's a really easy out if you want to find an excuse. We had men working all over the place.

"A lot of good things are happening at the moment but we're nowhere near getting ahead of ourselves. We finished third last in the competition and have to do a lot better next year."
