Hull KR v Huddersfield Giants: Willie Peters faces emotional Craven Park farewell with play-off place on the line

Willie Peters will allow himself to savour his final Craven Park experience as Hull KR head coach but knows sentiment will count for little unless the Robins get the result they need in their play-off bid.

The Australian is preparing to leave for a new challenge in the NRL after delivering unprecedented success to the Robins.

Peters' side claimed a historic treble last year and backed it up by winning the World Club Challenge in February.

Rovers have been unable to build on that landmark moment but a challenging campaign has not diminished Peters' affection for Craven Park.

"Every time I've coached here, I've been the proudest coach in the world sitting in that box and nothing will change this week," he said.

"I've got one more opportunity to do that. I just want to be able to look out on the park one more time and look at this team that this community and fanbase are proud of.

"It's important they do that with their actions and we put in a strong performance for the fans."

Friday's game will go a long way to determining whether Peters' KR tenure extends beyond next week.

The defending Super League champions remain on course for a play-off place despite an untimely three-match losing run.

However, defeat to Huddersfield Giants could open the door for St Helens ahead of their final-round clash.

"We win this game and we’re in the six," said Peters. "If we don’t, we’re fighting to survive in the six.

"Potentially, we could still make it (a home play-off) but when you're relying on opposition teams, it's more than likely it's not going to happen.

"It’s important we finish our last home game at Craven Park with a strong performance – because we haven't done that the last two times we've been here."

Peters could welcome back as many as eight key players after making wholesale changes for last week's defeat to Wigan Warriors.

Jim Lenihan has braced the in-form Giants for a rejuvenated Hull KR.

"I've got no doubt all their eggs are in this basket," said Lenihan, whose Huddersfield side have won five of their last six games in a remarkable turnaround. "They'll be sharpening their knives so there are no illusions about what we're walking into.

"I wouldn't want it any other way. We're happy for the challenge."
