Jim Lenihan explains why Cole Geyer has played his last game for Huddersfield Giants

Jim Lenihan admits salary-cap considerations have prevented Huddersfield Giants from keeping Cole Geyer for next season.

The hooker has been recalled by Championship title hopefuls Oldham after making a strong impression during his loan spell at the Accu Stadium.

Lenihan would have liked to retain Bradford Bulls-linked Geyer but the Giants' plans for 2027 mean they are unable to accommodate him.

"Unfortunately at this point, I just don't think we can fit him into what we've got next year," said the Huddersfield boss.

"He's done a wonderful job for us this year – as an individual and as a team-mate to others.

"At this point with possible inclusions for next year, he's probably one that we're unable to keep. We'd obviously love to keep him."

Geyer, who linked up with the Giants in May, has played his last game for the club after signing off with a double in the win over Leigh Leopards.

The Australian must quickly turn his attention to Oldham's play-off bid following his recall.

"There's no doubt he's been playing well for us," added Lenihan, who has also lost George Flanagan Jr and Sam Hewitt to injury for Friday's trip to Hull KR.

"He's freed up a lot of players in the side. He's a runner and gets through the ruck. He's a little bit unorthodox for what largely happens over here with hookers and is a point of difference.

"Unfortunately with the system in place, Oldham have the right to take him back and we're stuck with that decision."
