'Take things to next level': Mark Applegarth excited about York Knights' future after defying expectations

Mark Applegarth believes York Knights have laid the foundations for an even brighter future after defying expectations in their maiden Super League campaign.

The Knights – promoted on half the central funding of most of their rivals – were tipped to struggle but end the season in 10th place, above established top-flight clubs Castleford Tigers, Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants.

Applegarth is confident York will go from strength to strength under new owner David Dickson.

"We wanted to secure that 10th spot," said Applegarth after York's 35-16 victory over Bradford Bulls.

"It's a great way to sign off. Our main aim was to give our fans something to sing about in the off-season and also sign off the lads who are no longer going to be with us. We ticked both boxes.

"We've got the first year out of the way and now it's time to kick on. We wouldn't be in Super League if it wasn't for Clint (Goodchild), so you've got to give him credit, but David coming in will take things to the next level.

"It's not going to be an overnight success. A lot of hard work needs to go into it."

Thursday's win, which consigned Bradford to the wooden spoon, featured one of the highlights of the Super League season as former Australia prop Paul Vaughan signed off his career with a late drop goal.

The 35-year-old's decision to slot over a one-pointer produced a fitting finale to his time at York.

"It was as much a surprise to me as anyone else," said Applegarth with a smile.

"I'm just really pleased for Paul. With his family back home, I know how tough he's been doing it. He's such a big family man.

"It was great to see them all celebrating how they did. It was a real good moment for the big man.

"In my opinion, he's one of the best to pull on a York shirt. I don't think it's always about time spent at a club but the impact they make. If we don't have Paul Vaughan in our team, we're a different team altogether this year.

"After the career he's had, I'm just really glad that his lasting memory will be that win."
