It might not be everyone's idea of a great day on the Yorkshire coast to stand on a blowy clifftop for several hours in winter and stare out to sea. But if you visit the rocky finger of Filey Brigg or the chalk headland at Flamborough the chances are you will come across a few people huddled round high-powered telescopes hoping to spot the relatively uncommon birds which move up and down the UK's inland waters at this time of year.
