Bridge 42: North Yorkshire Moors Railway confirms full Pickering to Whitby services will resume in June

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway confirmed its full line between Pickering and Whitby will reopen following work to ensure the safety and reliability of Bridge 42.

The heritage railway said passengers will once again be able to travel the full 24-mile route through the North York Moors National Park to Whitby from Monday (June 1).

This comes after a period of disruption caused by work on the bridge.

The route also serves Grosmont, where visitors can access the Rail Trail walking route, the railway’s engine sheds, independent food and drink outlets, an art gallery and the country’s oldest surviving Co-operative store.

The railway has also announced a new fare structure for 2026, including a Kids Go Free offer on standard services, with one free child ticket available per fare-paying adult.

Day Rover tickets will continue to offer unlimited travel across the line, while shorter journey tickets will start from £11.95 for adults.

Laura Strangeway, chief executive of the NYMR, said: “We’re delighted to once again be taking passengers all the way from Pickering to Grosmont and Whitby on the NYMR . Whether visitors are looking for a short heritage journey or a full day out exploring the line, we’ve got a ticket to suit everyone; especially with our Kids Go Free offer on standard services and School Holiday Saver Rates to help families enjoy adventures together.”

She added: “Our heritage railway is at the heart of the local community, and it’s important that we continue to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all our visitors.

“The proactive measures for Bridge 42 reflect our commitment to both operational safety and the long-term preservation of this historic line. I want to thank a number of vital suppliers and organisations and the residents of Grosmont, whose help and support during this period has been invaluable - North Yorkshire Council, North York Moors National Park, GGP, Murlac, CML, and Prop Hire.”

The railway said temporary propping was installed following inspections earlier this year, with a full repair programme for Bridge 42 scheduled to take place during the winter 2026/27 closed season.

A public appeal has also been launched to help fund the temporary works and future repairs, with the railway aiming to raise at least £800,000.
