Old Peculier Ice Cream: Two Yorkshire producers collaborate to launch new ice cream inspired by popular ale

Two Yorkshire producers, Theakston Brewery and Brymor Ice Cream, team up to launch Old Peculier Ice Cream inspired by a popular ale.

The ice cream developed by two independent businesses located three miles apart in Masham captures the rich character and flavour notes of Old Peculier.

The launch marks the latest chapter in Old Peculier’s journey beyond the glass. The Old Peculier ale is often paired with recipes such as casseroles, stews, and hearty puddings and has inspired a range of Peculier preserves.

In collaboration with Brymor, it has been transformed into an ice cream, creating a distinctly Yorkshire indulgence for ice cream parlours, pubs, restaurants and retailers alike.

Old Peculier Ice Cream is now being served at Brymor’s Ice Cream Parlour and is available for pubs, bars and hospitality venues looking to offer visitors a Yorkshire-themed dessert.

The product will also be stocked by selected farm shops, delicatessens and independent retailers, with distribution focused across Yorkshire, the North East and North West.

Chairman of T&R Theakston, Simon Theakston, said: “As we look ahead to 200 years of brewing in Masham, we're delighted to be partnering with Brymor on this unique Yorkshire collaboration.

“Old Peculier has long been enjoyed beyond the pint glass, bringing its distinctive character to a wide range of recipes. Working with a fellow Masham producer to create an ice cream inspired by our most famous beer felt like a natural fit, and we're looking forward to seeing people enjoy it across the region.”

The ice cream is handmade in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales using rich local milk and Brymor has been serving award-winning Yorkshire ice cream for more than 40 years.

Senior manufacturing manager at Brymor Ice Cream, Heather Wilson, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be collaborating with Theakston Brewery to create our new Old Peculier Ice Cream.

“As two Yorkshire businesses with a shared commitment to quality, tradition and a strong sense of local identity, the partnership felt like a natural fit.”

Managing director at Brymor Ice Cream, Paul Hodgson, said: “At Brymor, we are passionate about creating great tasting ice cream while continuing to innovate and bring something new and exciting to our customers.

“Working with the iconic Theakston brewery, based in our local town, gives us the opportunity to bring together these much-loved products in a very distinctive way.”

The launch comes as Theakston prepares to celebrate its bicentenary in 2027, marking 200 years since the family brewery was established in Masham in 1827.
