Whitby vape shop wins approval for changes to Grade II-listed building
A new vape shop in Whitby has been given the green light for external renovations to the 18th-century property in the town’s conservation area.
The Church Street Vape Shop will be allowed to repaint the exterior of the Grade-II listed premises after North Yorkshire Council approved the proposal.
Located at 57 Church Street, Whitby’s “newest vape and tobacco shop” announced its opening in July.
The shop’s manager said he was “grateful” for the decision and noted that “as of yet, nothing has been changed”.

The existing cream coloured timber shopfront will be repainted in crimson and white colours, using a sans-serif font for the shop sign fascia.
“The existing building envelope will be retained, with the proposed painting limited to the shopfront and the proposed materials of linseed oil paints are sympathetic to the existing building’s appearance, meaning the proposed painting is reversible,” planners said.
No objections were made by residents, and NYC’s conservation officer also supported the scheme.
“The Grade-II listed building is a traditional late-18th century shop and residence which reflects a traditional commercial/residence building type,” the planning report states.
“It holds historical interest as one of the remaining high-density shop/house buildings on Church Street built during Whitby’s 17th- and 18th-century shipbuilding and whaling boom. In addition, the building benefits from a spatial group value with several adjacent Grade II-listed buildings on Church Street.”
It added: “The proposed works will not affect any historic fabric, being limited solely to the painting of the shopfront.
“Therefore, the proposal does not involve the loss of any significant historic and architectural features, and it is not considered that the proposed painting would harm the architectural and historical integrity of the Grade II-listed building.”
The application was approved by North Yorkshire Council, subject to conditions, on Monday, November 2.
