Coronavirus in Yorkshire: UK cases jump to 798 in largest day-on-day increase

A total of 798 people in the UK have now tested positive for coronavirus, the Department of Health has confirmed.

The figure, accurate as of 9am today, is a rise of 208 cases from the same point on Thursday.

It is the largest day-on-day increase yet, as the government's scientific adviser warns the actual number of people infected with the virus could be much higher.

Speaking after an emergency Cobra meeting yesterday, Sir Patrick Vallance said there could be between 5,000 and 10,000 people infected in the UK at the moment.

In Yorkshire, 27 people have tested positive for the virus as of 9am on Thursday.

An updated total and regional breakdown will be published by Public Health England later this afternoon.
