Junk Soul Smothered: Yorkshire vegan restaurant wins PETA Vegan Food Award for best vegan chicken

A Beverley-based vegan restaurant - Junk Soul Smothered - has won Best Vegan Chicken in PETA’s 2026 Vegan Food Awards.

Junk Soul Smothered won the award for its ‘chicken’ parmo, a popular dish combining crisp vegan ‘chicken’ with a rich, slow-cooked sauce.

PETA vice president of vegan corporate projects, Dawn Carr, said: “Junk Soul Smothered has put a tasty vegan twist on a traditional dish that’s kind to chickens and worthy of the top spot.

“PETA’s 2026 Vegan Food Awards celebrate businesses serving up delicious fare and making it easier than ever to choose foods that don’t harm animals.”

PETA said vegan foods have a smaller carbon footprint, while meat and dairy industries are top producers of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

According to PETA, eating vegan lowers a person’s risk of developing heart disease and certain types of cancer.

The Yorkshire restaurant was one of many winners at PETA’s Vegan Food Award.

Other winners include Edinburgh business Ciao Roma, which took Best Ice Cream for its Vegan Biscoff; Scottish brand Jarvis Pickle, which took Best Pie for its plant-based Haggis Pie; Three Robins (Best Milk); The Cheese Cellar (Best Cheese); Fisherman’s Bay (Best Vegan Fish); Beyond Meat (Best Burger); La Vie (Best Snack); THIS (Best Vegan Steak); Plantuguese (Best Vegan Egg); Tofoo and Co. (Best Hot Dog); Pixie Bakes (Best Cake); Heavenly Vegan Coffi (Best Dessert); Morso Bakery (Best Pastry); and Ombar (Best Chocolate).
