Photos of obliterated cars after 'selfish' 70mph driver, 24, ran red light before blaming woman he hit

This is all that was left when a “selfish, reckless” driver ran a red light in Sheffield at 70mph and sent a woman’s car spinning.

Sahil Hussain, of Homestead Drive, Brinsworth, caused both his and his victim’s cars to “leave the ground” when he rammed into an innocent driver.

The victim was pulling out of the junction of Attercliffe Common and Weedon Street, just before 9am on September 25, 2024, when Hussain, then aged 24, decided to chance the red light in his Volkswagen Passat.

Hussain was jailed for 27 months at Sheffield Crown Court on November 12, for causing injury by dangerous driving, where the judge told him it was a “miracle” his victim was not killed or more seriously hurt.

Now, photos taken by police officers at the scene illustrate what the judge meant.

The crash left both cars unrecognisable. The front ends of each vehicle were destroyed, with parts and broken glass strewn across the carriageway.

The pictures also show the heap where emergency services left each cars’ roofs after cutting them off to free those inside the vehicles.

The force of the collision span the victim’s car around. She suffered multiple fractured ribs, severe bruising and damage to her knee and hips. She was forced to take three months off work, and today, over a year after the crash, she still suffers pain in her chest and hips.

Witnesses told police how 24-year-old Hussain stood around after the crash using his mobile phone while others rushed to see if the other driver was okay.

But when police put the evidence of his appalling driving to him down at the station, Hussain blamed his victim fault - and claimed she must have “colluded” with all of the witnesses to pin the blame on him.

“That would have been simply impossible,” said His Honour Judge David Dixon at Hussain’s sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court on November 11, “as she was being cut from her car by the fire service at the time.

“This was reckless driving in the extreme.

“Not once did you go to see if [the victim] was alright - and worst still, when you were arrested, you said it was her fault.”
