The RSPB Bempton Cliffs column: Winter brings a different flock of delights

You’ll probably know we’re here but when did you last visit, and why come in winter?
RSPB Bempton Cliffs is an international destination, visitors come from across the UK and abroad because of the wildlife spectacle you have on your doorstep.
Bempton is famous because of the seabirds that nest here in spring but in winter we host a new set of birds.
You may have popped up to see our Puffins but now they are far away on the high seas and won’t be back until March/April; now a new set of avian visitors use the site.

Over the clifftop fields Barn and Short-eared owls can find voles, creeping out into the open to feed, while linnets and goldfinches twitter in flocks as they rise from the crops planted to give them food. The owls have competition as kestrels hover over the grassland and can even ambush the owls to take their catch.
Closer to the cliffs you might catch the world’s fastest bird and watch the peregrine take to the air in search of unwary pigeons. If we are lucky the winter months always bring the chance of Snow Buntings too, beautiful visitors from Scandinavia.
As I write this, a pod of dolphins is passing close to the cliffs; these fabulous creatures cruise by throughout the year as they travel between Scarborough and Bridlington.
These are animals that started out in Scotland and have expanded their range South and seem very happy to be living off our shores.

Winter storms at sea can look fabulous from the cliffs but if they make landfall and you need to retreat the visitor centre has a great little café with hot drinks and snacks and the shop can supply you with gifts for Christmas. Bring the outdoors in and shop our nature-inspired range.
Entry to the visitor centre is free so pop in for a coffee and say hi. We can’t guarantee a distant storm, or dolphins or even owls but nature is full of surprises – and there’s always the view and a warm welcome. See our website for opening times and event details. rspb.org.uk/bemptoncliffs
