Other countries are switching to clean energy, why shouldn’t Britain? - Yorkshire Post Letters
From: Laura McQuillan, Sheffield.
If clean energy is the reason why our electricity is so expensive compared with our neighbours, why do 11 European countries have cleaner electricity grids than we do?
If nuclear energy is supposed to be better than wind and solar, why is France, proud of its world-class expertise in the technology, investing so much in wind and solar too?
If we’re so worried about the loss of agricultural land, why were we so resistant to wind turbines on English land for nearly a decade? You can still farm around a turbine.

And why are the French and the Americans doing better than we are at combining farming with solar panels? American solar shepherds have their own association, and the French are investing in research into growing crops on solar farms.
Why, when all this is happening, do people claim Britain is going it alone? We’re not. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden all have more wind and solar capacity per head than we do, and not one of them is a country that failed to notice the price of electricity.
The world is changing, and technologies and techniques are becoming ever more efficient and cost-effective. If we keep looking backwards, as Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage would have us do, we’ll watch the North Sea run dry having failed to prepare for the future.
