Matt Hamshaw on why Dave Challinor will enjoy life at Sheffield Wednesday

Matt Hamshaw says new Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Challinor will enjoy working at a club moving in the right direction with players who showed their commitment to the cause on Sunday.

Challinor was watching from the stands as the Owls drew 1-1 with Blackpool, having been appointed as their new manager hours earlier.

The hosts played some excellent football in the early stages and took a deserved lead through Davis Keillor-Dunn but when Sil Swinkels was contentiously sent off for a professional foul after 40 minutes, they had to demonstrate character.

Although they were unable to hold onto all three points, former striker Jerry Yates finding an equaliser, there were plenty of positives for the new manager.

"We have to remain feet on the ground," said Hamshaw, whose two home games in a week as caretaker manager both ended 1-1. "We've got a point.

"But if you strip everything back, the positive signs are there and the commitment and endeavour.

"Tactically you probably want to see what he saw, but more the fight, enthusiasm, getting back behind the ball, helping team-mates out.

"There were a couple of instances where their players had a bit to do with our players and our players were in there backing each other up. I think that sets good teams apart.

"I just think it gives the group a lot of belief about what we can be.

"A lot of things (required) weren't football related, it was more the pride, the passion, the duals. That is what's going to stand this group in good stead moving forward."

Challinor joins having managed in every division from England's eighth to third tier with four different clubs. He came close to completing a full set of promotions when Stockport County lost May’s League One play-off final to Bolton Wanderers, leading to his resignation.

He worked alongside Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson at Edgeley Park. Once the latter moved to Hillsborough in the summer, it always felt likely Challinor would reunite with him in time.

Hamshaw, who found out about the appointment as he drove to Hillsborough for Sunday's game, faced Challinor twice as Rotherham United manager last season, and was impressed.

"Dave's a real good bloke.," he said. "He's a good manager. He's proven.

"And he's going to enjoy it.

"He's coming into a club that I think can achieve amazing things through his ownership.

"He's going to need a bit of time. It's not going to be a quick fix thing but it's going to be exciting times for the club.

"He's won a lot of games over the years so tactically he's very good.

"Stockport played good football, tenacious, won the battles. He understands the opposition, he's diligent."

On Swinkels' red card, for a foul on Tom Bloxham, Hamshaw said: "I was worried at the beginning, if I'm going to be honest. He's last man.

"(Bloxham) is going away from goal, would he have scored? There's a number of questions that would be asked but the referee's made a decision.

"We can't change that once it's happened, and I thought the players saw the gameplan out really well."
