Traffic chaos after petrol station sold fuel for 99p a litre

Drivers were pictured rushing to take advantage of the cheap pricing of fuel.

The offer was due to run from 10am to 4pm but came to a close earlier in the afternoon after the garage hit its 20,000-litre fuel limit for the promotion.

Matt Launchbury, area manager for the Motor Fuel Group, said: "What we’ve done is had an extensive three-month rebuild here and we’ve totally knocked down the existing site and rebuilt our new shop and Subway.

"It’s been a really, really good success for us."

Marcus Sellars, who went to the petrol station yesterday, said: "Aylsham Road was completely packed because of the prices the garage is offering, it took me about 30 minutes to get from the Lidl to the Esso garage."

Driving from Lidl to this particular Esso garage would normally take around five minutes.

Phil Large said: "I haven’t seen fuel under a pound for years.

"The garage was closed for about 15 to 20 minutes while they changed the fuel priced back over."

Struck Valentin, aged 30, of Norfolk said: "I was actually walking to the petrol station to grab a drink.

"The entrance was blocked from both sides of the road with cars waiting to enter.

"I could see the traffic from the petrol station all the way south towards the city.

"It was at a stand still.

"I saw an ambulance that had to make its way through the queue."

This comes after a petrol prices petrol prices cut by up to 2p a litre by two major supermarkets after a fall in wholesale costs.

Asda announced last week a price drop - which means drivers will pay no more than £1.27 at its filling stations.

And Morrison also cut the cost of unleaded by up to 2p a litre at all 355 filling stations.
