Many areas of Yorkshire have been issued with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms today (August 16) by the Met Office - but where in the region can we expect thunder?

It isn't certain but today could see bouts of thunder and lightning in various parts of Yorkshire with clouds, sea fret and showers predicted throughout the day.

According to the Met Office, today will begin cloudy, especially toward hills and coasts. A sea fret will likely linger north of Flamborough Head.

Outbreaks of rain or showers are expected to occur through the morning, with heavy thundery showers developing at times from late morning onward.

Tonight, rain, cloud and showers may linger for much of the evening, however, it may clear from the north of the region overnight with partly cloudy skies developing and it is expected to be cooler than recently with a minimum temperature of 11C.

The areas in North Yorkshire where thunderstorms are likely to hit are: Richmond, York, Ripon, Knaresborough, Northallerton, Whitby, Harrogate, Pickering, Thirsk, Skipton, Malton, Helmsley, Easingwold, Malham, Bedale, Scarborough, Grassington, Leyburn, Robin Hood’s Bay, Settle, Masham, Hawes, Boroughbridge, Tadcaster, Staithes, Selby, Filey, Pateley Bridge, Hutton-le-Hole, Great Ayton, Yarm, Catterick, Middlesbrough, Kettlewell and Tockwith.

The areas in West Yorkshire that could see thunderstorms are: Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Keighley, Wetherby, Pontefract, Batley, Otley, Castleford, Morley, Dewsbury, Todmorden, Holmfirth, Pudsey, Baildon, Ilkley, Hebden Bridge, Shipley, Normanton, Bingley, Rothwell, Ossett, Horsforth, Brighouse, Mirfield, Yeadon, Cleckheaton, Elland, Saltaire, Guiseley, Sowerby Bridge, Slaithwaite, Garforth, Honley, Liversedge, Boston Spa and Haworth.

The areas in South Yorkshire where thunderstorms are likely are: Barnsley, Bawtry, Conisbrough, Doncaster, Hoyland, Maltby, Mexborough, Penistone, Rotherham, Sheffield, Stocksbridge, Thorne, Tickhill and Wath Upon Dearne.

The areas in East Yorkshire issued with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms are: Hull, Goole, Driffield, Beverley, Pocklington, Bridlington, Hornsea, Withernsea, Flamborough, Bempton, Market Weighton, Hedon, Snaith and Howden.

While some places may remain dry, others are likely to see thunderstorms with torrential rain bringing some disruption.

- Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

- Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life.

- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

- Some communities might become cut off if roads are flooded.

- Power cuts may occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
