Cyber security for manufacturers: How employee awareness protects your business

Cyber security starts with people: Here’s why your workforce is your first line of defence and how you can ensure they are ready.

As manufacturers move increasingly towards digitalisation of production, cyber resilience depends on more than technology alone. Building awareness and confidence across your workforce could be one of the most effective ways to protect production and business continuity.

When manufacturers think about cyber security, it's often the technology that gets the most attention.

Firewalls, software updates and secure systems all play an important role. But as cyber threats continue to evolve, many businesses are finding that one of their strongest defences isn't technology at all. It's people.

Give your people the power to stop it

Human error remains one of the most common causes of cyber security incidents. A suspicious email is opened. A password is reused. Sensitive information is shared unintentionally.

While these actions might seem small, they can have serious consequences for manufacturing businesses.

An incident can interrupt production, delay orders, disrupt customers and suppliers, and increase costs. As more manufacturers adopt connected technologies, cyber security increasingly becomes a business continuity issue rather than simply an IT challenge.

It doesn’t have to be expensive

The good news is that strengthening cyber security doesn't always begin with major investment.

Often, it starts by helping employees understand cyber risks, recognise potential threats and develop safer working practices.

That could mean learning how to spot a phishing email, creating stronger passwords, protecting sensitive information or knowing how to respond when something doesn't look right.

When awareness is embedded throughout a business, cyber security becomes part of everyday decision-making rather than something that only receives attention when a problem occurs.

For manufacturers, this can help protect operations, build confidence and support future growth.

Government funded programme

That's why a new £400,000 Government-funded cyber security pilot is being delivered by Made Smarter Yorkshire in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University.

The fully funded programme supports manufacturers at different stages of their cyber security journey, from introductory awareness sessions through to Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus and support towards ISO 27001.

Our experts in cyber security, digital forensics and organisational change will help businesses understand the risks they face and, just as importantly, develop people who can champion safer working practices and make cyber awareness part of everyday working life.

By developing Cyber Security Champions within their workforce and working towards cyber security certification, businesses can encourage safer working practices, improve awareness across teams and strengthen their overall cyber resilience.

In a world where digital technologies are becoming increasingly important to competitiveness and growth, building cyber awareness is no longer just about protecting systems. It's about protecting the ability of a business to operate and grow.
