Barnsley FC boss Daniel Stendel on transfers, Mael de Gevigney admission plus injury update ahead of Doncaster Rovers derby

BARNSLEY head coach Daniel Stendel has confirmed that the club are hoping to move on a clutch of squad players before the summer window deadline.

The likes of Georgie Gent, Kelechi Nwakali and Kacper Lopata have not been involved so far this term and are not in Stendel’s plans.

Senior professionals Corey O'Keeffe and Jack Shepherd have also been unused substitutes in the club's first two matches of 2026-27 and their futures look uncertain.

On the incoming front, the Reds - who sold Mael de Gevigney to Danish outfit Silkeborg this week - are pushing to bring in new signings, with their focus being another badly-needed striking option.

But they are also conscious of moving on squad players while working within the parameters of the Salary Cost Management Protocol, which limits most League One clubs to spending 50 per cent of their revenue on wages.

Stendel said: "We are in a situation at the moment where the squad is not ready. We have some players that we want to bring in and some we want to bring out or want to leave.

"It's maybe not different to some other clubs. Sometimes it's not easy to handle it every time, but this is my job and we do it well and we give everybody a chance every week to train well and to be a part of the squad.

"But some players know that we don't really plan with them.

"Mael was different, he made the decision (desire to leave) before I came and he's not a player that I would say he had to leave because I like his attitude and his quality in training.

"In the last time he was injured, he couldn't train every training. But he's a character, a really good character.

"I think not only for our club but for every club where he played and I wish him all the best for his new chance in Denmark but I think we would miss the character and the change in him."

Meanwhile, Stendel has revealed that Cieran Slicker, Vimal Yoganathan and Isaac Smith are likely to be sidelined for ‘the next six weeks’ after picking up injuries in pre-season.

Summer signing Clayton Taylor could be involved in Saturday's derby at Doncaster Rovers.
