'Open' - Sheffield United legend Billy Sharp makes admission over future after Doncaster Rovers decision
Sheffield United legend Billy Sharp makes admission over future ahead of Doncaster Rovers exit
Sheffield United legend Billy Sharp is “open to opportunities” with his Doncaster Rovers contract due to expire this summer.
The 40-year-old returned to Doncaster for a fourth spell in the summer of 2024, helping the club clinch the League Two title last year.
His influence has waned this term and the veteran will leave Grant McCann’s squad when the current League One campaign comes to a close.
Fans have been left to ponder the possibility of retirement for Sharp, who is among the most revered marksmen in EFL history.

Billy Sharp on his future
However, in an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, Sharp has claimed he would be able to play on for another year.
He said: "Doncaster means a lot to me. They looked after me when I was going through tough times in my personal life. When I went back two years ago I wanted to achieve something with them because that club means a lot to me. It's my second home.
"I've had two amazing years and to get promoted last year was great, and with an amazing set of lads. The gaffer's been brilliant with me. I've enjoyed it. I've got a good relationship with Grant and he'll bring players in next year and I won't be one of them.
“I can play on another year but I'm not quite sure what I'll do. I'm open to opportunities, whether that's another club as a player or whatever. I'll just see. I've only been a free agent once and I ended up going to LA Galaxy. I'll just see what opportunities I can get. It's exciting.
"I'm not saying I won't carry on. I'm leaving that wide open. I've been injured for five weeks and have worked hard to get back. Touch wood nothing happens the next few days and I'll be playing at the weekend. I'll look to play the next few games and then have a think in the summer what I'm going to do."

Billy Sharp’s legacy
Best-known for his exploits in the colours of Sheffield United, Sharp scored 129 goals in 377 appearances across three spells at Bramall Lane. The forward also counts Leeds United and Hull City among his former clubs.
In a statement confirming his upcoming departure, Doncaster said: “Billy’s legacy at Doncaster Rovers extends far beyond statistics. Across each spell at the club, he has represented Rovers with unwavering commitment, professionalism and pride.

“His leadership, experience and connection with supporters have made him a constant reference point both on and off the pitch, and a figure synonymous with the values of the football club.
“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Billy Sharp for the goals, the dedication, and for everything he has given during his time in red and white. His contributions have created memories that will live long in the history of Doncaster Rovers Football Club.”
